CHURCH EXPANSION VISION – INDIBEDDA METHODIST CHURCH MORATUMULLA CIRCUIT MORATUWA
Introduction
Indibedda Methodist church has more than 134 years history. During this period church has grown in numbers and served the kingdom of God whilst continuing the noble service of ancestors. At the start church had only few families and only around 60 people worshiped in the church. However, after 134 years, we have more than 300 families and over 600 members
Why we need a church expansion
We have only 161 seating capacity in the church .When our ancestors build this beautiful church they had only 60 people worship in the church but they have built it for 161 expecting it to grow. Currently we have grown more than they expected and worshipping over 300 in a normal holy communion Sundays. Currently more than half of the members seating outside the church where they experience many distractions. We as a congregation has decided that we need to expand the church in order to allow every member to seat inside the sanctuary while worshipping. As mentioned, our ancestors built this church for 161 while only 60 worshipping in the church in 1887. We also thought to expand this to facilitate 500 worshipers expecting our membership to grow further
Budget
The estimated total cost for the alterations and extensions to the church is Rs. 37mn – (USD 185,000/-).
- From our local members and families residing overseas - 22Mn (USD 110,000/-)
- Overseas donors and well wishes - 6Mn (USD 30,000/-)
- Foreign Christian Institutions and Special Funds - 6Mn (USD 30,000/-)
- Funds currently available at Church Renovation Fund - 3Mn (USD 15,000/-)
Why we need your support
We have distributed 270 covenant cards among our members expecting 22Mn from them. A special worship service was organized to declare their commitment and during the service 145 families have assured a sum of Rs 15Mn. Accordingly, we have been able to raise Rs. 5Mn during past 09 months, 30% of the full commitment which is commendable as result of challenges faced by them due to pandemic. Further, 125 families to be confirmed their commitments soon and we are confident that we can meet our expectations of 22Mn from our members Moratuwa is predominantly a carpentry industry area known for many centuries. Most of our members work as carpenters and earn daily or weekly wages. Their income is around LKR 8,000/- to 10,000/- (USD 40/- to USD 50/-) per week. With this income they have to full fill family requirements as well monthly contribution to the Church to cover the other expenses including stipend of the ministers. In spite of meagre income earn by them to bear the expenses of livelihood we are expecting Rs. 22Mn from our members. Hence, we will not be able to push our members more with their income levels which world aggravate their hardships. We have further Rs. 12Mn requirement in order to meet our budget where we need your financial assistance. Even a small amount count. Some Sunday school children contribute out from their pocket money and some skip their tea or coffee and collect such funds to a till to assist this church expansion vision revealed by God to the elders, leaders of the Church.
